Definitions, Applications, Uses and Specifications
Adhesives
These are the “sticky” component that join two surfaces - they generally take the form of a tape (adhesive only, no membrane)or a glue stick which when melted is all adhesive. In addition adhesive is available in spray canisters as permanent or removable adhesive.
Adhesive transfer
Consists of a layer of adhesive only without a backing surface to give strength for application. Thus a film is “all adhesive” and offers adhesion from both surfaces. ATG or Adhesive transfer, is easily applied using an ATG gun or dispenser.
Tape
A tape product consists of a backing membrane on one or both sides of which adhesive has been layered. Thus giving single and double sided tapes. The membrane lends strength and handling/application ability to the adhesive.
Films
Consist of a membrane only, generally one side of which has had a layer of low tack adhesive applied in order that the film will attach. It’s primary use is as a membrane not as a packaging or sealing item.
Parcel Security
Consider tape to be your insurance policy - it ensures that the parcel or product to which it has been applied remains intact during transit. The “bigger” the tape the better your policy. Tape strength is oftenmeasured by the thickness of the backing material - and this is measured in microns (one micron is .001 of a millimetre). Today common tape backing material ranges from 25 microns to 50 plus microns and will be of a cellulose, polypropylene or vinyl composition. The adhesive on the tape will often comprise a rubber, synthetic (acrylic) and solvent free base.Additional security can be gained by having your tape custom printed. This not only makes it evident that a package has been tampered with, but also provides an added opportunity to add your branding. The permutations and combinations of membrane product, membrane thickness and adhesive type and colour lead to a myriad of options. Consult your experienced Paklink memberfor guidance.
Tape applications Home and office
Generally of a cellulose structure used in a shop at the counter, for small parcels, or as magic tape (invisible or mending tape). Also for repairs to documents books etc.
Packaging
Polypropylene is an economic product for parceland carton closure. It can be applied by hand or by machine (when roll lengths are regularly 1500 metres) and mayrequire properties to handle extreme conditions of heat, cold, humidity etc.
Vinyl tape
is also used in parcel and box sealing, but being vinylit does have less stretch and thus generally better adhesion. Generally suitable for hand application only.
Strapping
Coloured vinyl tape in a range of colours has a vast range of applications bundling (produce growing), colour coding (cattle flagging), floor (lane marking), industrial process, insulating tape.
Filament tape
A particularly strong product with fibreglass reinforcing of the tape backing membrane is used for bundlingof heavy items (steel rods) or for parcels requiring considerable protection.
Masking tape
A paper or vinyl product for painting (brush, roller or spray) duty to ensure that the paint conforms to the pattern or lines desired. It is sacrificed when the painting job is completed.
Agricultural
All weather tape, a heavy duty product is used in repair of PVC and polythene tunnel houses as well as a the temporary securing of damaged glass in glass houses.
Electrical
Insulation tape is a PVC film with a rubber adhesive for use in most electrical workings.
Foam sealant tapes
Single and double sided foam tapes of many (foam) thicknesses and many applications (foam composition). Uses include dust sealing, glass (double glazing) and all industrial applications.
VHB
Very high bond tape provide adhesion at least as good as welding and in addition provide a barrier between two dissimilar metals. A more reliable component eventuates in that the metal is not heated or perforated (pop rivets), it does allow for some movement (outdoor temperature changes) and the “join” is invisible on the completed item.
Adhesives
Paklink members are proud to offer a range of Hot melt adhesive products. Applied from a “hot melt glue gun” these glues offer a broad range of problem solving (depending upon the adhesive employed) from gap filling to strength bonding.
